during と while の違いと使い方を教えてください

during と whileは「～の間に」と訳しますね。

 

間違えやすい使い分けについて説明します。

during

during + 名詞

 

duringの後には名詞が続きます。

 

I visited Tokyo during my holiday.
During my holiday, I visited Tokyo.
私は休みの間に東京を訪れました。

 

I was nervous during the exam.
During the exam, I was nervous.
テストの間緊張しました。

 

時間帯・季節を言う場合、通常duringを使います
例えば、the morning, the night, the summer, the winter などです。

 

Where are you going during the summer?
夏休みの間どこに行きますか？

while

while + 主語 + 動詞

 

whileの後には文が続きます。

 

I visited Tokyo while I was on holiday.
While I was on holiday, I visited Tokyo.

 

I was nervous, while I was taking an exam.
While I was taking an exam, I was nervous.

 

She cleaned my room while I watched TV.
私がTVを見ている間、彼女は私の部屋を掃除した。

 

While you were out, many customers came.
あなたが外出中、たくさん客が来た。

未来のことを言う場合

未来の事を話すとき、whileの後に続く文には現在形を用います。

 

What are you going to do while you are taking a long rest?
長い休憩時間の間、何をするつもり？

 

I'll see my grand father while I stay here.
私が滞在する間、祖父に会うつもりです。
