mostとalmostの違いと使い方

両方とも日本語では「ほとんど」と訳すので、違いが分かりにくいですよね。
どんな場合に、mostとalmostを使い分ければよいのでしょうか？

 

most

ほとんどの〜…たいていの、大部分の

 

most ＋ 複数名詞

 

Most students take public transit.
Most of the students take public transit.
ほとんどの（たいていの、大部分の）学生は公共交通機関を利用します。

 

Most students = Most of the students

 

almost

ほとんど

 

「副詞」として用います。

 

Almost all students left.
ほとんど全ての学生は帰りました。

 

【注意】「副詞 almost」　は、「名詞 students」を修飾することができません。
almost + all + students　となります。

 

almost + 動詞

 

I almost died.
死にそうでした。（もう少しで死ぬところだった）

 

almost + 数字

 

I am almost 20.
私はもうすぐ２０歳です。（ほとんど２０歳）
